is this fixable??? 4 bolt horror.
is this fixable??? 4 bolt horror.
dont ask how it happened, i dont know. i pulled a 350 4 bolt from my 86 and when i checked it out ...i found a crescent moon shaped crack on the OIL filter cup housing thing....on the lip of it....heres a pic....
Can this be fixed? any ideas?? or is the block trashed?? i doesnt seem to interfere with the oil filter, i stuck one on it, it sealed fine....but under heat it may crack more....however this isnt a high stress area....
the pic prolly looks worse than it actually is, it IS slightly dented....but the light in the pic makes it look more dented than it actually is.
opinions PLEASE

Looks ok as long as it's not near the mating surface of the oil filter. You'll need to take a Dremal sanding drum to smooth it out and get rid of any edges. That should prevent any further cracking or chipping.

yeah, i thought about slapping some exhaust manifold crack fixer epoxy whatever it is....crpa....spread it over it.....the mating surface is fine....the crack didnt go all the way thrrough, its just on the outside....heres some better pics...well...bet i can get at night...
i couldn't find the crack in your pics, but if you want to truely fix it you'd need to grind all of the crack out and reweld it. blocks aren't hard to weld, they're made of good quality cast. another option would be to drill stop holes at each end of the crack and weld it. considering how easy block are to come by i ithnk i'd just find another block.

here i drew a line over the crack, its not a very thick crack...and it doesnt go all the way through...
and finding another 4 bolt 350 around here runs 300 for just the bare block.....id rather fix what i have ..ya know....IF its fixable...
like i said i *think* itll be ok as is......due to it being a non stress part of the engine
this crack does not go through to the wall behind it, but heat bay make it crack through....
well the ends od the cracks are basicy on the edge of the rim as you can see in the re done pic....i was just suggesting epoxy so the metal wouldnt fall off....i know it wouldnt actually fix the crack

ok i see it now. if that's all it is it doesn't look like it can go anywhere and doesn't hurt anything structurally. i think i'd grind it a bit and fill it with epoxy, jb weld, or devcon.
lol that looks more like a 25 ounce hammer hit it while someone was trying to smack a flywheel......--whistles-- wasnt meeeeeeeee LOL
the crack doesnt look lik eitll spread to the inner base of the filter housing.....but theres only one real way to know if itll mess up, and thats to slap it in and run it....
keep in mine the crack isnt liek "seen here actual size" heh ita about 2 inchecks long...either way....i think it could of been ALOT worse.

Man sean, just bring that damn block over, and I'll break out the rotozip & wham.
I have these big two inch sanding drum, and we'll have it smoothened out in about one minute

eh, if you're worried about the sealing surface of the filter cracking, unbolt the screw on filter adapter and put on one from a filter relocation kit.... then just mount the filter somewhere else underhood. the oil filter sealing surface wont be needed then.
