Need Help with Trouble Code (a bit lengthy)...

Hi everyone,

This is actually a question about my winter car, an 84 Olds Delta 88 with the 307 4bbl and 200R4 transmission. The other day, the car was "warming up", a process which usually takes about 3-5 minutes, and ends with the engine revving like crazy until I stomp on the gas and kick it down. Well, towards the end of the warm up sequence, the check engine light went on...I kicked it down, drove the car away, and 30 seconds later the light went off. I checked the trouble codes as the tech section said, (had to use pin connectors 5 and 6) and came up with a code 24, which according to the tech section, is the Vehicle Speed Sensor circuit...what I wanted to know was, are the codes from this website applicable to the ECM in an 84 Olds? If so, anyone have any ideas what may have caused this; ie, a faulty sensor, bad wiring, or what? I looked it up in my firebird chilton's manual and it mentioned something about the VSS controlling the TCC engagement (which I have probs with on the highway @ 40-55 mph) and EGR valve operation. Thanks guys,

Steve

87,

That's really strange. The VSS shouldn't even input the ECM and the ECM shouldn't expect VSS unless the ECM thinks the transmission is in gear. There is a switch on some GMs that signals the ECM when the trans selector is not in PARK or NEUTRAL (it should be on ECM terminal 'B10' on your '84 ECM).

The neutral safety switch actually grounds the ECM terminal when in PARK or NEUTRAL, bypassing the VSS expectation in the programming. Make sure the ground connection at the safety switch is secure, and that the switch is correctly adjusted. The wire from the ECM to the safety switch is orange/black, and from the switch to ground is black/white.

You can also check the ECM edge connectors if the switch tests O.K.
