AIR Pump...what's it do...

My AIR pump on my 86 IROC is squealing like a trapped rodent...I changed the belt and I think it's the pump itself...question is, if this goes up, or if I remove the belt, will this affect the performance of the engine, or just my emissions? I'm gonna have to replace it...but if I just take the belt off for now, will it have any adverse effects?

No problem removing the belt. It won't hurt anything.

Its only emmission related.

So if I disconnect it it won't affect cold startup or anything like that, other than extra emissions?

Correct.. But i have heard that it could plug the catalytic converter, not to sure about that though. If u wanted to insure yourself against that you could always gut the cat, but be sure to run a pipe through there so you won't lose much torque....

The squeeling is the shaft bearing on it's way out. If you leave the belt on it'll freeze up on you and you can kiss your belt good bye. Gives a pretty good smoke show in the process too! It's best just to get rid of the belt for now and/or replace the pump. Mine's off till emissions test time...
