what is hei ignition

sorry for such a simple question but i just don't know what it is. And does my 83 2.8 have it. What is different about it from other ignitions? thanks Eric

Yup.

But keep in mind that by today's standards there's nothing "high energy" about it. That term was coined back when points were pretty standard, and the advent of electronic energy aloowed (among otherthings) full voltage for the coil, and higher out put. So back in the late '70's it was "High energy" Ignition -compared to what came before it.

hei replaced points in 74-75 in gm cars. not sure when points were discontinued with the other makers.
