How far in should the balancer go?

I need to know how far to press the harmonic balancer into the front cover? I bought a installation tool and after going most of the way in it snapped! I've got about 3/8 of an inch of shiny metal left showing on the balancer. I know this sounds like a dumb question but I can't for the life of me remember how it goes.

You go until the hub bottoms out on the crankshaft. tighten the bolt until it comes into it's torque spec then your done. Joe

the rear side of the dampner hub will contact the crank gear. in other word keep pressing it till it stops.

I guess it's all right since the tool I was using broke. I don't think it could possibly go any farther. Thanks for the replys
