something weird just happened
I was just driving around....started to slow down...and my car sped up. Not like...5 mph...like....25mph QUICK! So i shifted to neutral...the rpms went to 8000 i shut off the car....it tried to stay running (pre-ignigion). after turning it on and off about 5 times it finally stopped running. What could have caused this?

chances of you hearing a vacuum leak is slight...
cover your intake/air ducts/whatever and spray ether around...
if theres a leak, the vacuum will suck the ether in and rev the engine, hence you locating where you vacuum leak, if any at all, is
IAC perhaps?

My friend's 84 carbed T/A had a computer connector loose near the top, by the carb, and it caused his car to steadily accelerate and diesel badly when he turned it off. Just a thought. Course....yours is fuel injected right?
And yeah, check what everyone else said. Your throttle check is real simple. Open the throttle yourself and let go...with the engine off of course. If it closes slowly or stays open, your spring is bad.

This may sound stupid...but do you have a floormat on the driver floor area, did it get bunched up?
SCCA and most autocross events ban all floormats for exactly the problem you described.
I know, it has happened to me.

ok...i'll check for leaks....where exactly would i get ether? and...isn't ether explosive? How would I check the timing...and I'll check to make sure the distributor is tight. the car IS carbed...I'll look for loose connections tomorrow when it's light out. and I'll also check the throttle check tomorrow too. I do have a floor mat....but make sure it's pulled ALL the way back when I'm driving...that was the first thing I checked after it happened. I'm getting rid of those damn things as soon as I get my new carpet.

whoa, whoa, i had the same problem, start with the throttle return spring. its the cheapest, easiest, and definatly makes the most sense.
take off your air cleaner assembly.
on the driver side of the carburetor you should see a 4-6" long spring that attaches from the side of the carb to a bracket on the intake manifold.
either the spring broke, or, it's just has become too weak.
drop by your autoparts store in the "HELP!" section, and pick up a dual throttle return spring. should look like one little spring inside of a big sprng. costs like $1.35.
DEFINATLY start with that, and don't worry about timing, or vacuum leaks just yet.
my last dollar is on the throttle linkage cable.

this may sound like an odd question......can I press the gas pedal without flooding the car if it's not running? This way i can have someone pump the gas pedal and I can watch. I've never owned a carbed car before.....

yea it will flood it a lil.... but a few times is no prob... if it doesnt want to start, hold the throttle to the floor when you crank it.
if you push the pedal ALOT, you may just have to take the aircleaner off and wait a halfhour for the extra fuel to evaporate.
i wouldnt worry too much about flooring it..
and if you're replacing it, be sure to get dual springs.... so if one fails, the other one is still there.
while you're looking, unhook your throttle cable, and slide it by hand from underhood.... it should move easily and smoothly... if theres grit in there, it can hang the throttle too...
