setting timing

I have a 90 5.7 with the serpentine belt . It seems that where I need to hold the timing light in order for it to flash on the balancer, is right where the alternator is. Do i just need to try and find a different angle? Anyone else have this problem?

never had that problem. nothing should be in the way of the mark if you hold the light at a certain angle.

Alright, thanks. I was being a little distracted at the time, and had been messing with the car all day.
