Water pump about to die

I think my water pump is about to take a dump. I noticed a rough whirring noise from the engine bay and the car's also been running a bit warmer than usual. Thinking it had to be one of the accessories, I used a steel rod like a stethoscope to check for the origin of the sound. I could hear it in all the accesories but it was really really loud in the water pump, Assuming it is the water pump, how long does it take to change it and how much does it cost? Is it easy or difficult.

This is a easy one! first if you have a serpentine system on the engine from the factory, then take the belt off and it's a matter of four bolts holding the pump on. just undo the bolts and take it off and scrape the old gaskets off apply adhesive and re-bolt fill with water(or antifreeze) and put pulley and belt back on. as for price i got a replacement for 20$ at my local parts store! if it leaks water from the pump or makes a squelling noise then thats the problem hope i helped???.

easy fix!! take your time. I am not a mechanic but the manuals you can buy @ auto zone or pepboys should be lots of help with any small problem. My water-pump went 3 months ago and i did not go with a cheap replacement. I took a suggestion and bought an edlbrock for $80. looks good (chrome) I ordered it from autozone in catolog took two days and it was in! Whips that coolant around fast. Third-gen. run hot anyways so I was told this would help and it did 10 degrees cooler!!!! very nice. Change all your hoses while your there flush system too. This repair helped me build confidence in my mechanical abilities.

Make sure that it is in fact the water pump. The way you can tell is there should be a small leak from the underside of the pump. The pumps on most third gens have a seal that breaks (a hole) and coolant will come out giving you the sign that the water pump isn't functioning correctly or it's about to go out.

With a serpentine belt, the rotation of the pump is reverse from a standard belt driven one. When I was getting quotes for mine last year I had to make this clear to the parts counter/phone clerks, none of them knew.

Installation is easy; very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon...

What ever you do do not go cheap and buy your water pump at some chain auto parts store! I guarantee you will be back under the hood time and time again. Your best bet is to go to a GM dealer and buy a brand new AC Delco water pump. Its the original equipment and it will last longer than any other water pump. It will cost you $158.00 and $16.00 for a new lower hose and $26.00 for the uper hose. $200 bucks to do the job but you will only have to do it once. Another thing! These chain auto parts stores will tell you lifetime warranty. So What! All they do to rebuilds is fix whats wrong and clean them up. They do it fast and cheap so if it fails they can replace it 5 times and still make money. Dont waste your time and do it right the first time. It either pay now or pay later.

Good Luck

Well, if you are so scared of buying a rebuilt water pump, you should know that all auto parts stores also stock brand new water pumps. Lifetime warranties also, and just built, they cost anywhere from $40-$60. Beats spending $100 more for the same stuff, and u can use that cash for better things anyway.
