I am building a 350 for my '88 camaro and I am buying the balancer soon. I see they have internal and external versions, but which one is right for my application? I think I understand the differance but haven't really been able to find a possitive answer. Thnkas for your help.

Depends on the year of the block (kinda) and crank. If it is a 400 (any year) it is externally, if you choose not to convert it to internal. If it is a one-piece it is an external, similar to a 400. All others are internal, unless you convert it over. Confused? Are you using OEM pieces? Is it a 1-piece? If yes to both it is externally balanced.

All factory small block Chevys, except the 400, are internally balanced.

to expand a little on what's been said. if you have a SBC with a one piece rear main seal it is internally balanced. the fly wheel/flex plate has a weight on it to make up for the lose material from the fly wheel flange being gone from the one piece seal cranks. it wasn't a weight, but it acted as one so the weight on the fly wheel/flex plate.

does that mean that I have to get a harmonic balancer that is internaly or externally balanced. I am using a OEM crank and connecting rods with a one piece rear main seal. Also would it be possible to use the flywheel/flex plate from my 305 TBI? Thanks again for all your help.

You have an internally balanced rotating assembly....that's all that needed to be said, so get an internally balanced (or neutral balance) dampener.
