Having some little problems with my car. Its an 84 Z-28. Bonestock except for new cat and catback. Sometimes when I first start my car up in the morning it will lope at idle for like 5 minutes then finally clear up. It doesnt do it every morning just like every couple of days. Also the car surges when I punch it from a dead stop. Or if I get on it from a roll once i start climbing in the rpms it will go up by like 250 rpms or so at a time. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Sounds like it your throttle position sensor is going to sh**. That's what I'd check first anyways.

 

I assume you have tuned it up and checked the timing, and the firing order? Maybe the mixrue solenoid on the carb is bad, or the wiring?

 

another symptom i have is when i start it up in the morning it will idle ay 1500 and take like 4 min for the idle to drop down to 750.

full tuneup was done 3 months ago and the timing was good a month ago. should probably check it again though. firing order is good.

i will do a search on the throtle position sensor & mixture solenoid. where are these two things located? if i replaced them would it be hard or costly? Thanks.

 

I think i may be running a little rich. My air filter smells like gas and I stuck my finger in the exhaust pipe and got a bunch of black soot. Also every morning when I let my car warm up black soot will spit out. Could that be causing me to surge?

 

Have an update. Today I put some of that engine cleaner treatment in my gas tank and also installed my open element. My bog is now gone and everything is fine. Anyone have an explanation? Also, if I am running a little rich how can I fix that?
