electric fan conversion questions
I want to convert to an electric fan on my 84 Camaro. The original fan works fine but I want an electric one so I can set it up to come on with a temp sensor or with a switch. That way I can turn it on manually to keep the motor extra cool at the track and to keep the motor from heating up after I shut it off. I was wondering if anyone has done this conversion and what parts they used? I was thinking of getting an electric fan and shroud from a 3rd gen out of a junk yard but don't know how well the stock electric fans work, or maybe theres an aftermarket setup that works better?

I just got all the components from a formula that had been partially burned, relays, harness and all that stuff, and put it in my car. Bolted right up! I even got the power steering "cooler" that runs under the core support and put it on my car.

Thanks for the reply. I'll probably end up doing something similar to that. I'll just need to find a temp sensor that makes the fan come on sooner than the stock ones do.

Yah, i want to do that too, but do u just take the fan off? What happens to the fan belts? are they converted to serpentine or left alone? I'll check around the local junkyards (if they haven't been grabbed). Also, would this be a noticable improvement in traffic driving? What would suffer(if anything)?

I just took the fan off, and put the nuts back on the pulley. You could also just get some bolts to replace the studs in ther water pump. For the fan switch, I got the Hypertech switch. I didn't get the 160 degree one, but the one I got was like 180, or somehting like that, to work with the 170 degree stat.
Good luck!

I pulled the single electric fan and shroud off a junkyard Z. Didn't worry about belts, just put it all back together like it used to be. The only problem I had was with the temp sensor switch to turn it on. Every one I could find seemed to be closed when cold and open when hot (the reverse of what i thought they would be). No computer, so i had to be careful there. So i just bought an adjustable one with a temp probe that mounts to the radiator from the parts store. Works fine.

Anyone know if there is a difference between the fans on a tpi, tbi, carbed thirdgen? I was curious if the fans on the tpi models flow more air than the others so I know if it matters what kind of car I get the fan from. I want to be sure I get plenty of air flow because I'm planning on a motor swap soon.
