Ram Air

I have a 92 3.1L Firebird, and I want to put air scoops in the place of the fog lights. I also planned on custom building the air box out of sheet metal, and possibly insulating it to keep the intake air temp as cool as possible. Is there such a thing as having too large of scoops? If I made the scoops as big as possible, would it force too much air into the engine? If so, could it hurt anything?

Thanks in advance,
any information/advice from someone with knowledge on the subject is appreciated.

Forcing too much air into the engine? Yeah, that's what it's supposed to do. The only adverse affect of too much air into the engine is too much horsepower (or more horsepower anyway). No...wait...That's not adverse at all .

Thanks Mark,
I just wanted to check with others. I know that my car doesn't use a MAF sensor, so I was wondering how exactly it would know hom much air is entering the engine. My guess is that uses the O2 sensor and measures the exhaust. My biggest concern came from reading something from a webpage{about some other kind of car, not f-bodies} that after driving on the highway for a while, it reset the guys idle calibrations for fuel and air or something like that. Once again, thanks for the advice, I think I'll drop by home depot today, to get a little inspiration. I still don't know exactly how I want it or what materials I'm going to use.

One major adverse effect will be that the more you block that area with scoops, the less air there will be for the radiator. If you have any cooling problems at all now they will be multiplied.

Aside from that, there's no such thing as too much air for the engine. Not a problem there. Make sure you leave some way for rain water to get out other than through the engine.

I would think you would be okay with cooling if you have a 180 degree thermo. and only use like 3 inch tubeing. Unless you live in a place that has like 80 - 90 degree temps year round. Just make sure your airdam is okay and your therm is working properly. (Those are my experiences anyway)

-K&N Airfilters
-Ported Plenum
-2.77 Gears (not much to brag about but eh, its there)
-MSD 8.5 mm plug wires
-Problems every other day with the car (probably not a mod, but to me it sure makes a difference)
