EGR operation??

Just wondering how the EGR "should" work given the way it was installed.
Mine is not controlled thru the ECM, it is just hooked directly up to a vacuum line.
*
So given that, shouldn't that make the EGR valve OPEN during idle since that is when there is the highest amount of vacuum?
I am not having any idle problems, and I can manually push up on the diaphram and it causes the engine to run rough and almost die at idle. So is it not working?
I know this is not the way it should be hooked up, but FIS put it on that way to try to get rid of the detonation problem at cruise and light accel.
Thanks

I'm a complete novice when it comes to EGR. I was hoping that you could tell me a little, since you already know more than I do. What exactly does the EGR do? What would happen if I took mine off? The person I bought the car from has the emissions totally screwed up. The car runs fine, but the air pump is completely disconnected, the vaccum lines are very rigged and the check engine light always comes on.

I live in a place where there are no emissions checks, so that's not a problem.

What do you think?

First of all, very few engines actually have a vacuum line straight from the intake to the valve. Even at that, they are ported vacuum (vacuum above idle) and they are backpressure valves, so it does not open at idle. Which car/engine do you have? All thirdgens have some sort of EGR solenoid.

As for EGR theory/operation, check this link out: EGR

This was on a 92 TPI setup with all emissions removed, physically and from the ECM. The EGR was added this way to see if it would reduce a detonation problem, but it hasn't. It is hooked to the vacuum line that is located on the bottom drivers side of the TPI throttle body, maybe this is one of those vacuum ports that does not have vacuum at idle?? That would explain it, so it must be. Thanks.

I found it amazing that even if you block off the EGR the motor still gets some. In the base there is passages milled into all the runners (like a 1/4" hole!)

2QUIK6, That is the ported vacuum port. There should not be any vacuum on it at idle, that's provided the idle adjustment screw is still at the factory setting. An easy way to tell is to remove the top TB plate. You will be able to see where the throttle plate blocks off the port when at an idle position.
