Car stalls when heat control activated

I have a 88 firebird and the car stalls if the heat switch is moved from cold to hot at idle. At higher rpms the car just runs poorly. I suspect that maybe it is a vacuum leak, but not sure. I don't want to take the dash off on a guess. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Definitely a vacuum leak. I'd check the heater control valve (above the pass. valve cover) before tearing the dash out. It's much easier to get to and if it doesn't hold vacuum it could cause that type of problem.

friend of mine had a problem like that it. I never figured it out but he ended up replacing the altenator and it never did it again, almost like the energy draw off the motor did it. It seemed to do it only when he moved the control for off - air - vent - heat - df not the one hot to cold. The hot to cold switch has to be a vacuum leak.
