Alternator question, (pic inside).

is this part of the alternator supposed to look like that ???

I think one of the "blocks" broke off...

how it happened ? I dunno , alternator worked fine , then I wanted to take it apart , clean and paint the case blue , so I did , and then I saw that there's only one of them , and the other wire looks broken off (it probably broke while I was taking the thing apart although I couldnt' find the broken off piece).

so , should I replace it before I put the alternator back together ?

and if so , what is it called , what's the part number.

PS: if it makes any difference , this alternator came out of a 1985 trans am , LG4.

thanks !

It definitely won't work like that. The thing that his missing is one of the brushes. You need either a brush set, or the brush holder assy. which includes the white plastic block.

You can get them at most any parts store, for just a couple of bux. Before you put it in, push the brushes all the way in against their springs, and stick a paper clip or toothpick or piece of wire or something through there to hold them in; make sure the thing you use is straight, and leave a little of it sticking through the back of the case, and pull it out when it's all the way together.
