Smokey Camaro

Hello Guys

I am new to this board and will start posting more in the upcoming months.

Story:
I have acquired an 85 Camaro from my dad and am in the building up stages. The car has been sitting for 6 years and since then was never started. I have replaced the carb with a semi stock one. The car now starts, runs and drives, but doesnt stop (working on the brakes this weekend).

I am going to replace the engine with a 408 in the next couple of months, so i will not be putting much, if any money into the existing 305, although i would like to drive it.

Thus the problem and my question:

The engine smokes like crazy after it sits in idle for awhile. (Answer): Valve job, but i dont want to goto all that work for i am replacing the engine.

Do you guys know of a product or *simple* way to solve this problem for the upcoming weeks? I am looking forward to driving it to work on occasion, but "smokey" can get annoying.

Thanks
-Jason

Yes.... it's called "valve guide seals". For about $25 in seals and gaskets you can make it go away.

Or since you're not keeping the engine just pour in some motor honey and see if it clears up.....

I'd just try any of them, go to an autoparts store or walmart and look at the additives area, there's a bunch of "motor honey" products out there that all do the same thing, so just choose one and try it. I've used "smoke-be-gone" in a car i had years ago and it cut down the smoking drastically.

Seals do not require a valve job. You pop the valve covers off (which probably leak and need new gaskets anyway), use a piece of rope stuffed into the cyls to keep the valves from falling in, and "rent" a valve spring compressor from Auto Zone or wherever.

There is no magic snake oil you can dump into an old motor that will make worn valve stems or valve guides grow. Since the factory didn't use the type of seals that might be able to be swelled up by some mystery potion and thereby actually begin sealing again, the problem is not subject to being "fixed" that way, let alone repaired.

Yes i did change the oil, that was the first thing i did after the coolant. I will try some of that smoke stuff this weekend after i finish the brakes and see what becomes of it.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes I realize this, in fact thats exactly what I told someone in another post. However he isn't looking to put work into this engine since he's replacing it soon so my suggestion was to try the "magic snake oil" for a quick fix.
