air from brake pedal???

Hello everyone,

interesting problem that needs expert consulting. When I push the brake pedal it sounds like air is coming out of it.

Not sure where the air IS coming from, but it happens anytime I depress the pedal.

Also, if I pump the brakes, the idle will increase a few hunded or so.

I was thinking it was the vacuum brake booster, but don't let that influence your guess. The brake pedal isn't extremely hard, and the brakes do work decently well.

Thanks for any thoughts, help, and ideas.

it is the brake booster. now, doe sit just go whoosh and stop when you quit pushing on the brake pedal? or does it make a constant sucking noise as you hold the pedal. if it's constant then there's a hole in the diaphram. if not, then you're ok.

No, it isn't constant. It only "wooshes" while pushing it down, when I hold the pedal there is no sound.

After posting this I drove and realized the pedal is kind of hard.

When you say I'm ok, do you mean it doesn't need replaced? Or do you mean my brakes will still work, I will just not have good vacuum?

What are the effects of this problem? I guess is what I am trying to say.

Thanks

It means your booster is dying. Sooner or later you will have no assist.

You should get a new one, before somebody gets hurt.
