I started watching it when it was about real-world dyno results from an induction swap. When it got a little more subjective, I thought I'd throw in some real part numbers to clarify the speculation. Max is close to right. It appears the "mix-'n-match" theory was at play in the early '90s.

Was there something else I missed?

What Madmax said was, the mix-and-match was in effect for the 80s (some LB9 autos running decent low 15/mid 15 second quarters stock, others stuck in the 16s), but by 1990 GM had settled on the L98 camshaft for use in the LB9.
But about the base gauge package... on a TBI car, your justification makes sense. The gauages reflect the car's capability, and those cars are all speed limited anyways. But on a TPI car, a 120 speedometer and a 5000 tach are moronic and don't reflect the car's capability. Every 1/4 mile run I take, I rev well into redline before shifting... 1-2 at 5300, 2-3 at 5100. I wouldn't shift that high if the car wasn't pulling the entire way

Finally, if you have a 90-92 TPI car, you have 16" wheels. The only speed limited 90-92 TPI cars are Z28s with the 235/55/16 tires and Trans Ams without WS6.

I cant help on the GM part number (well... maybe I can but I dont feel like dragging boxes out of my closet to look) but the 85 TPI cam is the L69 cam.
I have a non-G92 91 TPI in my car and it did not have the 'LA' cam in it. MrJ's car is too fast to be a LA cammed car. I guess we need some more proof, but I have a suspicion....
