Storing an engine...

I'm happy and sad at the same time. My L69 runs great, but I'm pulling it in favor of a 408 I had built professionally. I just got word that the engine is done, and ready for the dyno.

So - the HO will see some time on a stand until I figure out what to do with it. It was a full rebuild by me two years ago!! I put over 900 bucks into the machine work alone! But I did all the cleaning, disassembly, reassembly etc....which saved $$$, but I still have 1200 into it. I have done a few before.

I'd say less than 10,000 miles since it was done. So anyways, what's the best course of action here?? Keep the oil in it and prime it every once in a while with a drill and oil pump drive tool?

Or drain everything, fog the cylinders with fogging oil and put a bag on it?? I don't want it to go to waste, that's all.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Good Bye L69 :hail:

Fog it with ATF, drain all the coolant out of the block, drain the oil, put a new oil filter on it (can be a totally cheap one) so it doesn't leak, bag it, and get one of those little stands that lets it sit almost right on the floor. You can even get some heavy-duty casters at Home Depot or somewhere, to make it possible to move it around.

That sounds like a good idea! Come to think of it, I've seen those stands before...where do you get them at??

And how do I "fog" with ATF?? Spray it in the carb with the dist. unplugged and crank it??

EDIT: And thx RB!!

I followed much of your advice on this engine when I had it built.

The shop agreed with you too. The only 2 things I thought was strange was the shops recommendation that I run a Speed Demon DP and a mech. advance distributor. But performance wise, it guess it makes sense.

Thanks for the good word!! Glad it all worked out well.

To fog it, take off the air cleaner, and pour ATF down in it while you hold the RPMs at about 3000 or so; pour in about half a quart; then just dump the other half quart in and let it kill the engine (or let the throttle snap shut and kill it that way) with as much of the ATF sown in it as possible, so yo make sure everything in there is coated thoroughly.

I used to get those little stands from RHS, back in their day. I don't know who makes them now. Wouldn't be hard to do make it yourself though, it's just 2 vertical pieces of ¾" square tubing that goes in the 2 bottom bell housing bolts, a square box of it that sits on the floor, and 2 more verticals that go up to the lowest 2 motor mount bolts (one on each side) and have the tops cut at a 45° angle and a little pad of strip stock welded on to it to stick a bolt through.

ATF huh?? I know the engine's clean, since I've run synthetic the past two oil changes. So I assume the ATF is a protective coating??

I don't even have to pay shipping????.......tempting, but no thanks!!
