Need to replace steering column/ what to do about pass key
Need to replace steering column/ what to do about pass key
I have a 1992 chevy Camaro that the original owner broke the steering column at the turn signal lever. The idiot tried to pull the lever through the steering wheel. I am going to replace the column but what do I do about the pass key system? Do I just switch out the ignition switch or do I have change the ecm? I am really confused as to how the pass key system works.
Any help is appreciated

Unless you are trying to create a whole bunch of work or there is more damage than I think there is, you can replace just that upper part where the switch is. This is the first thing to go when people steal these cars with a screwdriver and hammer.
As for the pass key, all you need is the wires that are in your column, and the ignition lock cylinder.

Jody,
Max is probably right. Unless you find and exact replacement column, you'll end up opening it up to fish wires and change teh lock cylinder anyway. And if you get a used column, you might as well disassemble it, clean and lube everything, Loc-Tite the fasteners, and reassemble. It's not that difficult, just time consuming. The parts are readily available, since as Max stated, this is a favorite target of potential auto thieves.

If you decide to just replace part#17 in Vader's diagram, make sure you get one that accepts the VATS lock cylinder as it is slightly larger on the backside due to the chip reading module. If you decide to replace the whole column, once again, make sure your VATS cylinder fits. As long as you get an 89-92 column, it should fit no problem since they all had VATS.

Guys I believe that I have more damage than you think. The turn signal lever (Dimmer Lever) is not connected to anything anymore. If you try to dim the lights it just wiggles back and forth. The lever has broken away from the little bar that dims the lights. When I tried to fix the problem and reconnect the metal rod that slides up and down to dim the lights a bunch a broken plastic parts coated in grease fell out. With this new knowledge would it still be better to just try and fix my column.
