what kind of fan should i have?

My car is an 84 Z28 with L69 5 speed, 3.73 gears with no A/C. I bought the car with the original engine all torn apart and out of the car. When I was rebuilding it I realized I was missing a fan shroud and a fan.

I went to a chevy dealer and bought a new shroud that seemed like it was for a fan attached to the waterpump (old style).

I headed to the junkyard and found a good clutch type fan and bolted it on. It works great but I am sure it is robbing horsepower. Did my car come originally with an electric fan?

Thanks

Yes. The clutch fan will cost you several HP. Definitely get the electric!! You can find the assembly at boneyards without too much trouble, then buy a new motor if it needs it, they're not too bad.

Were you missing only the lower fan shroud? Not all cars had them.

Thanks, my motor is great now. It can give a new LS1 6 speed F-bod some trouble!

And I was missing both top and bottom, the car had an engine fire before i bought it. It was a mess, all the wiring and plastic stuff was fried!

I need to find some electric fans.

I would suggest getting the dual electric fan set up from a 87-92 Z or T/A.I beleive(I could be wrong)that they were available on the 5.7 cars,i got mine out of a 91 Z28 5.7.Car runs cooler than it did with the block fan, even with the new motor,355,AFR heads,10:1,Comp Xtreme energy.Just a suggestion!Got it cheap too, paid $15.
