Timing Help!

Hey guys I have a 88 camaro with a 83 305. I recenty had my heads ported ad rebuilt. I then bought headers and switched out my edelbrock cam to a Comp Cam Magnum cam(224/224 470/470). I also have the a gear drive from edelbrock and manifold/carburator as well. My problem with this is I can not seem to get the car to run very smoothly. It is missing and hesitating.
From my understanding the timing is 29 degrees for this cam but my tab only goes to 12. So I've guesed on my timing a bit. Would this cause the miss or is that unrelated( maybe fouled spark plug )? What do I do to time this right? So far my edelbrock cam (207/214 440 gross lift I think) feels stronger which greatly disappoints me! Please help me, this is the first engine I've ever built up, and please no bagging on the 305 decision. Thank you.

if you kept all your ecm controls i'd say the gear drive is messing up the knock senser

ok i reread your post. you want to set the base timing at or around 6*-8*, the vacumn and or mechanical controls will advance it to the full advance

Sorry ede, I forgot to mention that there is no ecm. everything has been converted to no ecm. I timed the edelbrock cam fine, it's the change to the comp cam that's giving the trouble. The card that came with it said something about 29 degrees. Hope that helps?

Which vacume port on the carb should I use? It's a 600 cfm manual choke edelbrock, I believe the part # is 1405?

As far as timing it at 29 degrees, thats what they suggest at full advance right?? Not base timing.

As Ede said above, I would start at about 8 degrees BASE.

The Ported vac. source for the vac. advance should be the pass side front port.

YES, that gear drive WILL mess up a knock sensor and retard the heck out of your timing. You just need to get a double roller set from Cloytes or Comp or somebody.

The degree numbers that are on camshaft cards are measured in crank degrees and pertain to the lobe position on the camshaft. Those numbers have absolutely nothing to do with your ignition/spark advance.

No ecm, no knock retard. Thats a myth anyway.

Set the base at 8 like everyone suggested.
