If you still have the stock Y pipe, you should not need to remove it. You may have a forward starter brace that will need to be removed, or at least loosened and swung out of the way, but th estarter should come out through the opening. Be careful of the detonation sensor and its connector when removing and installing the starter.

Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
Be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the cables from the starter...

I just installed a starter on a 1991 LO3 with stock exhaust. At first it looks like you might have to drop exhaust but you don't. Just take your time and play around with it and the starter will come out w/o messing with exhaust/y-pipe. As mentioned above the knock sensor is fairly close so watch out for that.

takes a little bit of manuvering but they'll fall right out, no need to do anythnig extra to r&r the starter on a thirdgen.

Put a newer style starter on it...you'll be glad you did. I asked about them on here and did a search on them...I assume 85's will work with the 95 Z28 starter.

Whoops...sorry I just noticed you have a pontiac....sorry bout the reply...
