305 tbi question about heads
okay i want to get my compersion up and im going to use a lt1 cam in my 89 formula tbi so wuz wondering how much can i get the heads milled down to raise comperssion on the lil 305.also is that even a possibilty and if so how much do,places usually charge for this.and should i jus find some 305 TPI heads instaed or stick with the tbi 305 heads.
Even though I'm a tightwad, I always spend as much as I can on the cylinder heads...this doesn't always mean more money, maybe just shopping around.
Check local engine / race shops / machine shops, alot of times you can find good deals on parts that people never picked up and the shop just wants them gone.

Compression isn't the problem on LO3/TBI heads. Swirlports is.
Putting an LT1 cam into an engine with shaved swirlport heads will drive a need for higher octane but will not produce more power.
The first thing to replace on a TBI engine is the exhaust. The 2nd is the heads.
Then you can consider a cam swap.

The heads you want are casting # 081. They're not just TPI heads; they're also on 87-up LG4 and L69 motors. So look in Monte Carlo SSs and base-model (carbed) 87 V8 Camaros and Birds for them too.
