distributor swap question
I've been trying in vein to figure out why my car stumbles and hesitates intermittently, and I've replaced almost everything, including the carb. Finally took it to a mechanic and he said to swap over to a non computer controlled distributor and non c.c. carb. So can I just use a distributor off of a 70's 305 or 350 GM block? If not, are most aftermarket distributors like MSD non CC???
thanks...
thanks...

That's not very good advice. Typical hilljack "I'm not good enough at this to figure out this electronic stuff, so just pay me to yank it all out". Sounds like you need a new "mechanic".
You'd do better to figure out what's wrong with what you've got. I'd suggest a tune-up first. Do it yourself, that way you know it's done right.
Start with a new set of spark plugs (regular AC/Delco ones, not some kind of gimmick or precious-metal wallet emptiers), a dist cap & rotor, and plug wires. I'd recommend either stock AC/Delco replacement ones, or Taylor Spiro-Pro. Not Accel.
Take a close look at every single vacuum line and fitting, make sure the hoses are all in good shape and are all properly hooked up as per the sticker in front of the radiator.
If that doesn't help it, come back and tell us what you found and what it's doing, and we'll try to help you figure it out further.

thanks for the advice.
I think I may have found my problem. I pulled the plugs to see what they looked like, and they are really black like the cars running way rich. I just replaced the plugs 2 months ago and they're already black. They're AC delcos. Also, while removing the plug wires, one of the boots slid right over the metal contact and it stayed connected to the spark plug, and I just barely was able to reconnect it. I just bought these wires 2 months ago too, but they're autozone cheapie wires so I'm gonna get a good set in the summit catalog.
My guess is either I having a fouling plug(s) due to the carb being rich, or the crappy plug wires aren't making a good connection. Does this sound right?

Found the problem! 1 fouled plug + 1 bad plug wire = crappy running car. Good thing I paid a mechanic to look at it and he didn't even find it!!!
Lessons learned: 1) never overlook the obvious and 2) be your own mechanic.
