cooling ?'s
just wondering what had to be done to convert from regular antifreeze to the pink sh*t. i think i read the the system had to be flushed out. also does it keep the engine cooler or does it just hold up longer than regular antifreeze?

It doesn't need to be flushed just drained since the dex-cool says it's alright to add to an existing mixture. I'm pretty sure it just lasts longer - it's supposedly just premixed w/o any "perfomance" additives or anything...

Base: 89 Iroc-Z LB9 auto 2.73 posi
Exh: 3" Dynomax muffler, 3" Pipe in place of cat
Ign: GMPP 8MM wires, Accel cap&rotor, AC Plugs
Fuel: Cleaned and flow-matched injectors, afpr, !air pump&diverter valve
Sound: Clarion deck, Kicker speakers and amps
Suspension/Drivetrain: KYB Shocks, BMR Strut Tower Brace
Misc: TB Bypass, All synthetics, Flexlite Transmission cooler
On the way: flow tech headers, alum. driveshaft

86,
I ROCK is correct, to some extent. DexCool can be mixed with "normal" silicate-bearing coolants without causing any problems, but as soon as you mix it with silicates, you lose the extended corrosion protection of the DexCool.
I've converted a few vehicles, and thoroughly flushed every one to make sure. I had one that leaked because of the change, but a new water outlet gasket solved that. The DexCool has a much higher molecular adhesivity than silicated ethylene glycols, so it tends to find the smallest openings and make its way out. It also holds more heat than "regular" coolant, and can reject it more easily due to the smaller molecules and adhesivity.
My '86 TA switched very well after I replaced the heater core, and has not had a problem with heating or leaks. The price of the coolant is getting more reasonable, but is still a little higher than plain etylene glycol. If you flush and change it all, you should be able to run five years without further service. That's primarily why I changed, since some of my cars sit in storage a long time. I'm tired of replacing heater cores every spring.
