question on balancer
I am planting an LT1 into my 3rd gen.. im trying to reuse the 3rd gen accessories to keep the costs down.. except the acc stick out about 1 pulley too far..
How interchangable are the Balancers? My idea.. use 3rd gen 305 balancer.. on LT1. that will push balancer out what is needed.. perhaps further.. then shim the acc bracket to line up.. But I understand that playing with balancers is a no no? What do I need to know about em?

i don't know if this will work yet.. haven't made it to the garage tonight.. What if i unbolted pulley from 305tpi and put it on the lt1 balancer? would the extra weight on the crank mess anything up?

A friend of mine who works in a shop has looked into that. IIRC, the standard SBC pulley bolt pattern is 3 bolts, 120° apart, evenly spaced. The LT1 pulley, I THINK, has 1 bolt ofset like 5° or so. Unless you notch your 305 puley, it will not bolt up. id suggest running the LT1 balancer, either way. Try this:
put the LT1 balancer and the 305 pulley back to back. Bolt the pulley to the balancer via the 2 holes that line up. make sure the crankway lines up. mark the bolt hole thats offset 5 degrees onto the pulley. drill out the pulley. i dont know if the LT1 balancer is drilled all the way though though. If it is, that, IMO, would be the easiest way to get your accessories to work. I dont know if thats even a legitimate idea, lol.
And yes, the LT1 balancer is 2 pieces. The balancer and the hub (the the woodruff key for that hub). unless someone has tried otherwise, i wonder if you could simply remove the LT1 woodruff key, hub, and balancer, and place the 305 balancer on, using the 305 woodruff key? probably wont be the best of balance......
