Help me set a poor soul straight.

A guy I work with swears that most of the parts from an LS1 style engine will interchange with a regular Gen 1 or Gen 2 SBC. Does anyone know any evidence I can use to refute (SP?) this? Does anyone know any specific reasons why the major components wont work? Pictures would help too. Thanks!!!

From http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/te...098/index.html :

"The LS1 engine appeared in 1997 in the Corvette and in 1998 in F-bodies. Even though this engine represented GM’s third-generation small-block, the design is entirely new."

About the only thing that allows this to be called a "small block Chevy" is it's smaller than BBC's, and was designed by Chevy.

One of our members (that I know of. There may be more) modified her heads to accept LS1 rockers. IIRC, it didn't take much.

Other than that there's nothing interchangable. Nothing.

They have different bores, different strokes, different head design, different block material, different firing order, different size rod and main journals, different rod lengths, etc. etc.

Five7kid is right with the SBC name. That's about the only similarity.

Perhaps you can tell them they're thinking of the LT1. Those engines share nearly everything with the Gen I engines except the water passages in the block, heads, and intake. But the cranks, cams, rods, pistons, and valve train is the "same".

It's proably not a worthwhile argument. Let 'em make an *** of themselves in front of someone else.

Just change the subject and walk away. A couple weeks ago someone on the V6 board INSISTED that the V6 and V8 versions of the 700R4 interchanged. He got really, really rude when he was politely told by at least six people that the bellhousings were nowhere near the same.

As they say "Some men you just can't reach"

A picture is worth 1000 words.

Let's start with the head bolt pattern on the block. Obviously, you can't put heads on a block if the bolt holes don't line up.

Whaddya think?

Here's a shot of the area under the timing cover. Note the oil pump parts on the crank and the oil pump pickup tube.

I could be wrong but I don't think a SBC oil pump will fit there.

Here's what the intake ports in the heads look like, looking straight down from above. The valley pan with the places for the 2 knock sensors is in the middle.

This is the view that most clearly shows why this motor runs as good as it does.

And last but not least, here's a shot of an exhaust manifold. Somehow I don't think any exhaust parts will be interchanging either.

So, all I can figure is, this guy has never seen a LS1 in his life except through the fenders and closed hood, and is merely shooting off his mouth, to the amusement of all his co-workers.

All these pics BTW are lifted off of eBay.

Aww, I ain't even going to bother with this one other than to say that any idiot can tell the differences between an LS1 and an LT1. As for the trans swap thing, we'll see...

True,They are totally different engines but I did read in a Smallblock Chevy Parts Interchange manual that the Hydraulic-Roller lifters are the same and WILL swap over.
