getting a free performance LT1 worth it? needs swap-age?
ok here is my story, i was going to build a carbed 350 but this literally fell into my lap. a guy i work with wants to get rid of an LT1 engine out of his 98 camaro. I know it is a better engine than the L98 my Iroc had, but it is high performance(he has shown me a dyno sheet showing 411 RWHP and like 450 TQ, and has track sheets with a 9.21 ET with a 200 shot fo nitros). what i am worried about is any clearance problems with the hood/headers/fenders/trans so on and so forth. and secondly i dont want to twist/warp my frame but at the same time i want a good hook up at the track, so along the lines of suspension what should i do besides sub frames and a roll cage? i really appreciate the help, and BTW there is like nothing out there on this, its all about taking a L98 block and changing that

First of all the 98 models had an LS1 not LT1. So I would make sure what you are getting that first. Did this car have a cage and an aftemarte rear. If not than his ET's are not right for his power numbers. Anyways, if it is an LT1 it will clear under your stock hood with ease. It is a very low profile and can fit under the most slender of hoods. You are going to need a lot of suspenion and rear end work to make 400 rear wheel hp reliable. I would try a search on the suspension board for that.
I wouldn't want an engine that has been put through the abuse of 200 shots of nitrous. And shifty is correct the 93-97 camaro/firebirds used the LT1 and 98-02 camaro/firebird used the LS1; so, make sure what you are getting first. Do a compression check, leakdown test, etc., you don't want this thing blowing on you after only a couple months or whatever.
If it really has that much power then you better have a tranny/rear end that can handle that much power.
Go to the engine swap forum there is tons of info on swaps just like this there.

no he has assured me it is an LT1, he bought the car with the work done to it and say the engine was originally in a vette, pulled out, rebuilt and put into the car before he bought it. and bes217, i thought about the nitros thing, but he said it was a staged kit and was a custom designed set for his engine, as for suspension and a cage, he does have a cage and some suspension work done, and he has i think 4.11 gears but switched to 3.73 gears in the rear end. i know i got to change stuff, so instead of buying parts for the carbed 350 i am building i will hold off and buy the nessecary torque arms, panhard rod, sub frames and so on. not with that what point cage should i go with, i am taking out the back seat so i was thinking an 8 point should do, but will it hinder me from using my t-tops? or will a 6 point surfise? thanks for the info and i am off to hunt other info down on other boards, but thanks
