Timing plate and so on
Working on Chevy's is very new to me. I'm going to swap out the cc distributor and carb. Planning ahead and rehearsing how this car is put together and so on, I cannot find the little timing plate. Furthermore, how do I tell where TDC is on the crank pulley?
Lastly, my Haynes manual (next to worthless) doesn't tell me the idiot information that I need, at least I'm an idiot that can't find the information. Which is the #1 plug and what is the firing order.
I have an '84 L69.
Thanks again.

#1 is front driver's side. Firing order is 18436572. 1357 are left, 2468 are on the right.
The timing mark is on the front of the timing cover, sort of underneath the power steering pump. It has a little tube on it that you can look through to see it at 0°. It also has a tab with some other values, up to about 12° BTDC, stamped in it. To use it you shine a timing light down between the water pump passage thing where it goes to the block and the power steering pump, behind the PS pump bracket, right along the surface of the block. The harmonic balancer has a groove in it that is supposed to be #1 TDC, you can fill it with white paint or shoe polish or something to make it easier to see.

I've found the groove in the balancer, but looked all over and can't see the little plate. What is it attached to?
Double checking, left is driver's side right - passenger

Look straight down from the top, between the water pump and the timing cover. (this is a b*tch.)
It is there on some SBCs.

Engineboy,
You're a life saver. I'd never had found that. I had to climb on top of the engine to see it. I have one of those really cool florescent drop lights and if it wasn't dark outside and I didn't have that thing, I doubt I would've seen it at all.
What a pain. Every engineer should be a mechanic before they design cars.........

I agree, if they had to work on some of this stuff they design, they might change a few things...
