Timing Adjustments, (non-Stock)

I bought an 87 Formula more than a year ago, it has a t-5 with a 350 swapped in. Cam, Aluminum Heads, Roller Rockers Etc...
My problem is i recently installed an msd ignition, but i haven't put on the 6Al yet because after i installed the distruter and am now trying to set timing im having problems because the stock setting is obviously no good. the engine will stall if i try to bring the timing mark down to even touch the metal jagged thing or whatever it's called. Also it has become rusted and i can't read the marks on it.

basicly what im asking is, how do i set timing past the mark, and how do i know what is a good setting since i obviously need somthing other than factory.

The rusty thing with marks is called a timing pointer. If your timing had to be that far advanced to run you will need either timing tape that goes on the balancer or a timing gun with an adjustment **** so you can get the timing mark back on the pointer.
