knock sensor sends signals but no code?

ok first off here's all my info:

91 pontiac trans am gta
350 TPI with some mods, basically bolt ons, (runners, headers, exhaust, MSD wires + coil + box, etc...)

anyway so heres my problem:

I hooked up my car to a OBD1 scanner to check how my car was running. My car wasn't throwing any codes but when i was looking at the real time operation status my knock sensor was sending some signals, so i decided to test drive my car with the scanner connected and sure enough when i put my foot on the gas the timing started to retard, it retarted up to 15 degrees, and sometimes jumped to 20 degrees when i floored it, but the time retard went strait to 0 when i let my foot of the gas. ive tried listening and i dont hear any audible knock so im in question to as if the signal is real. any suggestions on what it could be if it is a false knock, and if it is a real knock why isnt my engine throwing any codes?

thanks for the replys in advance, ill be happy to answer any questions you might have.

i ithnk what is happening is the knock senser is picking up know and sending a signal to the est to chage timing and not setting a code in the ecm.
