Starter shim problem

Car: 85 z28
Engine: 355
Transmission: T5
Starter shim problem

I have a 85 z28 I converted to standard,it has a the t-5 out of an 84 and a 350 motor,i bought the starter for the 84 camaro beacus ethe old 350 starter did not fit in the t-5 case.
The bendex will Not engage the flywheel i cant get it close enough we have tried alot of shims in dif combonations,and it ended up with the end of the starter breaking off,anyone have any ideas?

Axle/Gears: 4th gen 10-bolt, posi, 3.42 ratio
try an LT1 or ministarter, and see if this helps.
