Yeah I'll treat it nice 99% of the time but say I step on it hard or someone tries to mess with me at a light or I just feel like cruisin down the high way at 85 or 90 for a little while, am I gonna blow the engine if it is occasional uses like that or do you think I am safe?
Also if you read this and your car has high miles, can you let me know your milage and how it runs and what kind of problems you may have run into due to high milage......are these 305TPI's reliable high milage engines.

Well you just gave me hope. I've got 142,000 on my 91 FB, and haven't had any major problems(knock on wood). My clutch finally gave out at about 138K while racing a RX-7. I've replaced most normal things ie. starter, alt, batt, H20 pump. I'm starting to do all the suspension now, and what a difference. You dont notice how soft it gets when you drive it everyday. The bottom line is to take care of it. 305s last forever.
We are the lucky ones. My 85 Z28 has 221,000+ original miles. The valve covers have never been off. I knew the previous owner and puchased the car in 1992 w/ 125,000 mi. I know the history and have all the receipts. Its kinda scary to drive because I knew most (90%) of the sensors are original including the MAF. The original transmission was rebuilt at 185,000 mi which perplexed me because our 85 chev van went through 4 700-R4s before it even broke 100K miles. Go figure.
The only thing I notice about is behavior is that that its power band is not a good as it once was. The only pressure is not as high as it once was, but it is not that low either. My car smokes a little if I let it sit for 20 min after I have run it indicating that the valveguide seals are most likely shot. It begs to overheat sometimes. Like if I'm a little low on oil of I haven't checked my coolant for a month and it becomes a little low or air gets into the system. But I tell you this 305 TPI has overheated (I'm talking nuclear meltdown) at least 50+ times for various reasons and it still keeps on ticking. I mean serious "peg the gague" overheating. I have seen lesser engines become cast iron crap when subjected to 10% of the overheating trauma this beast has taken.
Basically it has been a gas-and-go car. Very low maintenance and very reliable even when it might sometimes have a freaky idle for a day or two and then decide to idle normally.

Heres the details, he wants $990 for it, I was thinking of offering him $900...
1986 Trans Am T-Top, Silver, Charcoal ground effects, Grey/Black interior.
No power Locks
Multiport fuel injection 305
Yes I have had leakage with the T-Tops
Top Speed is 140mph
Tire tread is good
Headlights work well
Fog lights need replacement bulbs
Trunk Pulldown was replaced in December 2000
The hood hydraulic struts work well
The trunk hydraulic work better in the summer as you probably know. But it did stay up when I replaced the pull down mechanism.
The battery was changed out March 1999 I have the receipt and warranty information from Walmart.
The thermostat was changed in March 1999 I have receipt.
Spark Plugs, wires rotor and cap were changed out Sept 2000, I have receipt for spark plugs
EGR valve, injector cleaning, cat convertor, fuel filter and O2 sensor changed out July 2000 I have receipt.
Alternator was changed out March 1999 I have receipt.
Tires replaced in January 2000 I have receipt
Radiator and Hoses replace January 2000 I have receipt
I also replaced the heater core in 1999 with a Pep Boys rebuilt core but I don't have ther receipt.[*]Good deal?

If the T-Tops have been leaking, be sure to check the floorboards. Mine were like that, and now I have holes rusted through them. Since you are going to be changing out the drivetrain, just make sure that it isn't bent up (that's what causes mine to leak... bent "frame") and there's no underbody rust.

car looks good, especially if it's drivable for 900 bucks, just need that front gfx repainted to match.. have you checked out the underbody for rust? what about near the wheels and the bottoms of the doors?
this could be a solid car to toss a nice build small block in.
looks like a good deal..

I have a 1991 Camaro RS 305 TBI (L03 engine) with 152,000 miles on it...tranny was rebuilt at 138,000. Everything is orginal with no aftermarket parts, besides K&N Filter.
I beat it like a dirty dog. You know the saying "Drive it like you stole it" Well...I do.
As far as a 305 lasting forever...I blew 2 305 out of my 81 Z28...finally went with a 350 and I'm in the process of building that one up to put in the 91.
305 are good engines until you start modding them...then you get problems.
But all should be good with it and just watch the oil and AF and all is cool.

No rust, no body damage, the interior is in great shape, and its a TPI. I think you got a hell of a deal.

that car looks sweet for $900...seems very clean too. thats pretty much the same deal i got w/ my car a year ago...85 Z28 w/ 305 LG4 nice paint, there's a dent in the front pass fender (75% of 3rd gens seem to have this i guess people just dont know what part of their car is where) and the interior was near mint. 60k miles and i got it for $900. since then i lost the motor to a detonation problem but **** i was suprised to get my car for the price i did. good luck w/ it and happy motoring
