Spark Plug question....resistor/non-resistor?
Hey all, what is the difference between resistor plugs and non-resistor plugs? Which are better?
My friends and I prefer to use non-resistor plugs. They allow more spark energy and are way more reliable than plugs with internal resistors. The heat and vibration from an engine commonly causes internal cracks in the resistor portion of the plug. The cracks increase resistance (sometimes more than double) and reduce the current flow to feed the spark. Cracked resistors are the most common cause of plugs to "die" and will cause misfires. If you use an ohm-meter to check your plugs you will see this.
Obviously I prefer non-resistor plugs, but they are hard to find at your parts store, and yes they do cause radio noise.
Denso brand is not the highest quality and only cost about $1 each, but that is what I was running in my 305 (stock heads) back in 1996 to get into the high 11's. The old part# was
T20P-U
any quality non-resistors will have to be special ordered.
good luck,
ODB

Hey ODB,
What sort of radio noise do they cause? I never use my radio (just cd player) but if the plugs would interfere with the amp or deck signal than they'd be out of the question. Thanks.

Base: 89 Iroc-Z LB9 auto 2.73 posi
Exh: 3" Dynomax muffler, 3" Pipe in place of cat
Ign: GMPP 8MM wires, Accel cap&rotor, AC Plugs
Fuel: Cleaned and flow-matched injectors, afpr, !air pump&diverter valve
Sound: Clarion deck, Kicker speakers and amps
Suspension/Drivetrain: KYB Shocks, TPIS Struts, BMR Strut Tower Brace

heard as pops at low rpm, and a buzz at high rpm.
Relocate your battery to the rear of the car, then hook all your stereo power & grounds to the rear and you won't get the noise.

Oh cool - I was going to relocate anyway: I've already got a big fat 4 guage wire to use anyway and may even run a Master kill switch to behind my license plate. Thanks man - I can believe something like that since it's based on basic automotive physics and not something like multiple electrodes...=-O

At least we all now know where your master kill switch is located...

I ran non-resistor plugs in my 85 once cuz they were the only plugs pep boys had that fit my '69 heads in the heat range i wanted. No radio noise, or interference with the computer to speak of.
