Leaking differential!..:O
I changed my diff fluid last week with a quart of mobil 1 75w-90 and two packets of posi additive. Now it leaks. I used a gasket and torqued to spec. What could cause a leak with a brand new gasket and freshly torqued bolts? This time I'm going to cut the gasket to allow axle oiling and also use blue rtv. Any arguments against rtv or ideas about why it leaked? Thanks in advance.

you might of over tightened the bolts. did you hammer out the dimples around the bolt holes in the cover before you put it back on? i'd take it back off, remove the old gasket, clean the parts with brake cleaner, i'd use high tack on the casting to hold the gasket in place and a thin layer of ultracopper on the cover.

AHA! Thanks, that's what I'll do, since I happen to have some high tack in virtually every form they sell it in and also some of that copper stuff. I never thought about hammering out the dimples, I didn't think it would have distorted that much but thinking back I remember the cover was sort of curved back. Is a rusty cover anything to be concerned about? Since I fell asleep last night, I'll probably take my time tonight and sand, primer, and paint the cover - is that a bad idea? thanks again

won't hurt anything to clean up the cover and paint it, just don't go with the fake chrome look (silver)

I ROCK - this is a little off subject, but I see your other post got locked down again (about the strut). I don't know what year you're driving, but the only plastic cover I'm aware of is that dust cover and it should just pop off - little plastic tabs is all what holds it, and then, of course, un-do the strut. I've changed my own struts before, so I know how to do it, but other than what I've said, I don't know how to help you any other way. The strut tower itself should not have to be disturbed at all. I hope you figure it out and good luck to you... I'd like to know how it goes...
