hydrogen peroxide in the engine?
Hello-
I was looking at a kids cavalier the other day, and he had a water bottle sitting in front of his radiator with a vacuum line plumbed to the top of it. I asked him what it was for, and he said that it's hydrogen peroxide. Supposedly as the hydrogen peroxide evaporates, it is sucked into the engine thru the vacuum line and it's supposed to clean out carbon buildup in the manifold, on the valves, and piston tops.
Anyone know if that will really work to help clean the motor out and keep it running clean? Will there be any negative side effects like seals drying out, or anything of that nature?
Just curious, because I have NEVER heard of this being done before. He "claims" that he can feel a difference in performance after running it for a couple weeks, but he's also not all that bright...
Thanks fellas

I suppose it will turn the carbon white.
I don't know if that will make him feel better when he pulls the engine apart or not, but it's his car.
It will dry out the carbon, but that defeats the purpose. Carbon IS dry, that's why it's hard as nails when you try to remove it from valves, combustion chambers, etc.
Water would to a better job since the hot steam will actually loosen the carbon deposits. I can't imagine hydrogen peroxide doing the same.
I mean, have you ever gotten it on your hands and let it dry?

Think he needs to put down the crack pipe. If you want to keep the motor clean, run good qualitly lubricants and change them on schedule.

good maintnance isn't an issue with my car, it was more of a preventative maintnance thing if it was any good. The carbon's gonna form no matter what tho...

As long as the car is well tuned carbon wont be much of an issue. If it runs like puke, though, then itll crud up inside. You can also use water to clean out the motor. Probably works alot better then the wafts of water vapor coming from the can of mostly water and a little bit of hydrogen peroxide.

I'm not gonna worry about it anyways, I'm gonna have the heads off again within a week or two anyways.
If I did try the water trick some time in the future, is there a better method than slowly pouring water in the tb? Well, that'd be a pain anyways though, I got TPI. I'd be pouring sideways
Thanks for putting the plug on a pointless idea guys

Berrymen makes a top end engine cleaning kit, works well for a $25 item. Most part stores carry it just have to ask. Its a 3 part system one bottle goes in the gas tank the other hooks upto a vacuum source and get suckes into the enigine like you friends
setup and the other part is a spray cleaner/lube for carb or TB. I'd reccomend it over spraying water down the TB. Ive used this kit a few times and it does clean up carbon but not if its totally caked onto the valves.

100% hydrogen peroxide will mess you up if you touch it if I remember from my chemistry class back in high school...

The main reason people run H2O2 injection is because it disintegrates into water and oxygen (that's what the bubbles are when you pour peroxide out, and what makes it a bleach, is that those are pure oxygen).... so it makes the engine capable of burning a little more fuel.

Ive seen that setup on both a dyno and an emmisions machine. It made know more power and no less emissions. Im not quite sure where that idea came from but it only emptys you wallet. Peroxide isnt rocket fuel. I pretty sure rocket fuel is a combination of iron oxide(not that one theres two of them) and aluminum powder.

Right, it can't possibly help WOT power since there's no vacuum to suck it in (any of these "injection" schemes requires vacuum to work); but it can definitely help emissions in certain cases.
But, it makes alot more sense to just get your car to run right, rather than to add something expendable to fake the test out. Not my idea of a good thing to do regardless of how it works.

Adding hydrogen and or oxygen to the combustion process in a non fuel form can be seriouslydangerous. That hydrogen is more likely to react with other residual gasses in there and completely change the exhaust composistion.

H2O2 is used in model rocketry now IIRC, and it is used as, surprise, an oxidizer. It's also used as a precursor and catalyst in other chemical reactions as well. For bleaching hair it is something like a 9% or more mixture.

Oh yea, and the guy was probably trying to run one of these:

I dunno, there wasn't any pump on his setup. It was strictly drawn into the chambers thru vacuum. The claimed increases weren't from attempting to use the hyd. peroxide as a supplimental fuel, but rather from cleaning all the carbon out of the manifold, off the piston tops, and the valves.
I didn't even realize that the hyd. peroxide you buy at the store is only 2% and 98% water, I was thinking it was pure for some reason
If I ever see the dork again, I'll have to tell him that
