racing question

I have camaro automatic 3.1L 1990. I was wondering if it is safe to bring up the rpm in neutral and then shift to either 1st or OD without messing up the tranny or the engine

No. I would not recommend that at all...What you really want to do is get the car going about 10mph in reverse...then slam it into first... just kiddin, step on the brake and raise the rpm's up. Then let off the brake and hit the gas at the same time. Experiment with the rpms to find whats right for you.

Not unless you have a lot of money to buy new transmissions.

An automatic tranny is not a standard with a clutch. Doing a neutral drop from a high rpm is the easiest way to destroy an automatic. You might as well jam it in reverse at highway speeds while you're at it. It will have the same effect.

If you want to launch at a higher rpm, buy a higher stall converter.

Neutral drops = very bad KABOOM!!!

With the trans in gear, hold the brake with your left foot to keep the car from moving. Give it gas with your right foot to raise the rpms while the car is sitting still (around 1000-1500 I'd guess). When you're ready to launch, release the brake and mash the gas to the floor at the same time. I'm assuming wheel spin won't be a problem, but if so, feather the gas until you hook up, then floor it.

my frined thought this would be cool also well he learned a good lesson neutral drop = destruction!!! first we changed the tranny mount, then he keep losing fliud, front seal blew out then he lost second gear all thogether!! and it still runs just shifts from first to 3rd no 2nd!!! so that should be a good indicator of what to expect!! no dont just power brake untill you find the break-way point and go just 100rpms under that and release brake and floor it!

My friend who had a 91 Tracer always did this when we raced. Squealed hard off the line (for a POS), but after 6 months it caught up with him, now it wont shift to 2nd.

A dumb*** at school tried this in his blazer. I'm driving out of the parking lot and all of a sudden I see bolts and pieces of metal blow out from underneath his truck. He revved it up to about 5000 rpm and dropped it into gear. He got it back 2 weeks later and did the exact same thing. Next, his dad to it away from him and he was riding the bus to school.
