Code 53

I have an 86 ta 305 4bbl code H engine. After long drives on the higway, I get a service engine soon light. When I read the codes I get a code 53 which according to the book is EGR system. I am having no trouble with the car, ie. stalling, rough idling, etc.

Does anyone know why I would keep getting this?

Thanks

It also means the following depending on your car.

53. High voltage at battery OR
High voltage at exhaust gas recirculation valve OR
Voltage reference error OR
Problem at vehicle anti-theft system

I don't believe your car has the VATS so I think we can rule that out. Have you checked your battery voltage after you get this code. Your alternator might be overcharging the battery.

Thanks for the response. Yea at 2K rpm I get 14.2 volts charging at the battery so I know I am ok there. No VATS so that can't be it. OTherwise, when I turn the car off and take short trips 3 - 5 miles no problem. OTherwise, long highway drives it comes on. Again never any negative effects just annoying...
