Roll Cage Questions

Ok, the majority of the T/A's interior has been removed... all that really remains is the seatbelts and the carpet, and I was wondering about Roll-Cages. Where can I get the plans for building one? I have a welder lined up, so all I would have to do is find plans and purchase the metal.

Anybody have any plans/pictures of some roll cages with specs. I'm in no real hurry until March break.

Thanks in advance.

All the specifications are in the NHRA rulebook.

I doubt you can build one from scratch. To bend the required size steel tubing, you need a mandrel pipe bender. You also need to be able to notch the pipes where they join together again needing a special tool. Mild steel bars need to be mig welded and chrome moly bars need to be tig welded.

You can buy a roll bar or cage as a kit and install it yourself.

Chassis Engineering sells a complete cage for less than 300, that you do have to weld in. You might want consider getting it, then doing your welding. It'll come with plates to weld the cage to as well. The main hoop, and the roof hoop are pre bent. The forward supports are also prebent. In my case I had to add some width the roof hoop. But it all went in just fine.

not to flame stephen but carbon steel can be tig welded and moly steel can be mig welded. it's all in how you go about doing it. the NHRA rule book would be a good place to start.

Hey Rob...howzit going? We'll hafta catch up someday....
I'd agree with Steven and Sean about getting a kit - they'll be already measured and bent correctly to fit. If you're still in Fredericton, check out King Performance, just off Union Street toward the river on the north side (I forget exactly which street it's on); a lot of people I know up there deal with them.

Hey Pete, I may just do that. I've have a new job starting in Toronto in May, so I basically have to put off all plans for the T/A and start a "crash" put it back together and on the road course. I'll contact King Perf and see how much everything is. I'm looking for something that's still going to the leave the car pretty streetable, and I have to get everything done after classes are over, and before I leave, so I may just leave it all for Toronto.
