Question about 305, what can it run?
Hello everyone. I have some questions that I would like to ask you third gen guys. If this is the wrong forum, sorry. I have a friend with an 87 IROC with the TPI 5.0 . The mods he has are straight pipes dumped under the doors, headers (hedman maybe?), bored .030 over, a 100 shot of nitrous, and other mods. Now the questions:
1- How many cubic inches will he have bored .030 over, 310, 315 maybe?
2- Does boring actually add horsepower, or does it do squat?
3- What is he looking at for rwhp and track times with/without nitrous?
Reason I’m asking this is that I have an 02 SS with PPC LT’s, TR 224/224 114 LSA cam, AS stage 2 5.3L heads, lid, LSX intake, GMMG exhaust, moser 12 bolt, DR’s, and other mods. With these I ran a best of 11.61@120, and am consistently at 11.7@119 or thereabouts, and on the dyno I put down 421 rwhp and 398 rwtq. My friend has never been to the track or dyno, and talks a lot of crap about how he could smoke my car. Is he smoking crack, or about right with his claims? Thanks everyone, great site and I love the third gens!

YOUR FRIEND IS SMOKING A TON OF CRACK. boring it .30 over would make it a 310, that probably added like 15 hp because of the extra cubes and compression. Now if he had it bored over he probably changed the heads and cam so who knows what hes running, but the fastest 305 I have ever seen was running low 13's highly modified and all motor, also if he has tpi he probably doesnt have to radical of a setup. I dont really know enough about the car and engine to say what he runs but I know for sure that even with nitrous there is almost no way a 305 can run your times, oh and your car sounds pretty sweet welcome to the boards.

Overboring an egnine can increase power if you add better heads and cam and all the other goodies. Even with his nitrous he is no match for your LS1. Not even in the same league. On a good day with his mods and spary he could be high to mid 13's. You will be bus lengths ahead of him when you cross the traps. He needs to do a little reseach before he opens his mouth. Without the juice he cannot even hang with a stock LT1 without getting worked hard.

i'd be surprised if he was running better then mid to low 15's in the 1/4(just motor). With the 100 shot maybe a low 14. He's in for a world of hurt if he thinks he's going to be running with your car.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I guess I can officially pull the
flag out on him. I didn't know what it would run, thanks for clearing this up for me.
Maybe I should add a 100 shot and give him a 4 sec headstart.
Thanks again, great site you got here.

with a 4 sec head start you'd probably still at least tie him if not beat him but .4 or somewhere in the area.. thats without the juice

It wouldn't even be a challenge. But by all means, race him and make him understand. Trending Topics

So sad but true. My modded 305(minus the heads) could not keep up with a stock LS1 brother. With the heads I am hopin just to stay closer this time. Here at my local track I ran a 15.1-15.3's(before the head swap and not corrected to sealevel) depending if I suck at driving that day or not. Stock LS1 auto cars are hitting 14.3's in stock form and the T-56 cars are closer to the tune of 13.8's-14 flats.
Tell your friend that he is full of sh** and tell him to go pick on a *****, lol.
I mean my car runs 15.1's(at best before the heads)and thats only good for a 14 second car at sealevel a 14.1-14.3 to be correct. A stock LS1 will kill me let alone a LS1 with all your mods. Hell I have trouble with stock LT1's they still beat me! lol Poor me.

there are several members here with 305's that have done basic 'free mods' and dipped in mid 13's....a handfull in 12's on spray....
i guess it all depends on the combo, conditions, and driver.

I have a very strong 305 but my buddy kicks my butt everytime we race. He has a '98 TransAm and he is running mid 12's with bolt ons. He has me by a little over a second. That is a lot at the track.

LS1's running low 14's? that doesnt sound right.. maybe its the elevation or somethin.. here in NJ bone stock LS1 autos run mid 13's and t-56 LS1s with good drivers run low/mid 13's.. personally my best run in my bone stock TA was a 13.4... your running 13's on stock heads and cam? thats really impressive.

MY CAR EXACTLY.
89 chevy camaro RS
305 ci- 5.0 liter (old lo3 engine)
Comp ex 262 cam
3.73 rear gear ratio
turbo 350 tranny
1 5/8" headers with 3" exhoust
magna flow muffler
650 cfm demon dp carb
Holley streat and strip dominator singal plane intake
b&m 3k stall convertor
bbk underdrive crank pulleys
stock heads
almost 200k miles on 15 year old motor
best et with stock 700r4 stock cam duel plane intake and pos ten year old holley 650 vs carb no underdrive crank pulleys was 15.3 at 88
best mph with all mod's except 3k stall convertor and underive crank pulley's was 15.5@ 92 mph with a 2.6 60' (mph is what matters when it comes to street racing.) I only got two runs in and they both had a ****y lauch
these where uncorrected times wich i ran at sir in tucson az.
I put down stock lt1's with out a problem and some slitly moded ones aswell new gt's go down with out problems aswell my best race so fare was a 2002 mustang gt with headers full exhoust 4.10 gears chip and some other stuff ran 14.5 in tuson az at 3000 feet above see leval. almost won i lost by half a fender at 120 mph i could not go any fast i was all out of gears.
so for anybody that thinks a lil 305 (no power adders) can not take down a stock ls1 well i have seen it happen but the guy that was driving was a dumb *** and it was a 98 ta wich are the slower of the ls1's wich had a $hit load of miles on it aswell. but other wise in most case's they can't do it but as lt1's go i have done it many times and so has some of my other frinds that have sence stepped up to a 350.
I think i just might be able to run a high 12 if i run a **** load of nitrous
and ported lg4 heads and 1.6 rollor rockers i think some one in **** boards has done it but i know willie runs 12's with a super charger and tim burgess runs high 11's on nitrous and they both have 305 irocs

yes but i only ran my car once sence but my mph went up buy 4 miles also i have a stock convertor for a 71 chevy van wich is what i got my turbo 350 tranny form and it stall at like 1400~rpm but i motor doesn't pull tell 2800~rpm so my car sucks from a died stop but when i race stock lt1's form a roll i can put them down prety easy. once i put in my 3k stall convertor in it will fix that problem.

Fastest 305 I heard of (and proven) ran 11.90's on a 150 shot. Bottom end was forged.
