AN size????!!?

Alright this may sound like a newb question but i have never heard hose refered to this way before, What is AN mean? there is like 4,6,8,10,12, and 16 AN and i have no clue what that means or how big it is? could someone help my dense *** out here? thanks!

just put 16 under the an number, 8an is 8/16" or 1/2"
