Engine: 355 TPI, 3.1L V6
Transmission: 700R4 in both
Check your timing, plugs, wires, module, coil, rotor!!

Did you degree in the cam?? I don't know who makes the LT4 hot cam but if it's not Crane or Comp then you can't install it straight up and expect it to run properly!!

The only thing else I can think is it could be the chip! You must need to upgrade to an aftermarket...most likely a custom chip!!

1986 Trans AM
305 TPI
200,000+ miles (speedo/odometer non-funtional! Odometer reads 142,000)
4 Wheel Discs
9 bolt Borg Warner Rear (2.73's....oh joy) :P
Completely Stock
Soon to upgrade to a 350 converted from TPI to Carb, Edelbrock 750CFM Carb, Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake, Headman Shorty Headers, Some sort of ported heads (undecided), XE268 Cam, Moroso HEI ignition kit with external MSD Blaster II Coil and an MSD 6-AL Box!!
Current project: Keeping my 305 running until I get my income tax returns!

I did install it straight up, lined up the timing marks on the new timing chain so thats all good. It could be the valve lash though, the car lacks MAJOR power and moves through the RPMs slower than it used to, like its not really floored or somthing.

Yea, could the valve lash or running too much fuel pressure make it smell like gas like a mother? It smells like a have a full service gas station in my garage, its pretty bad.

Hey dan, did you ever set the base timing? If I recall in an earlier post, you hadn't yet.

Also, recheck the plug wire routing.

Dan, while running fp of 47-52 I noticed I was getting backfiring when I shifted.

Try setting the fp around 44psi and see what happens. Just don't get on it too hard!

Okay, I know this is Obvious, But You didnt use the stock valvesprings did you ?

I dont see it in your Mod list, So I guess its possible, If you did you could be getting float at RPM and hence backfiring, Wich would be the least of your problems

Yes, I did get new valve springs and I had a machine shop install them for me. What do I have to do about that?
