changing spark plugs help...

I was wondering if anyone had tips or ideas for changing my plugs.. with the headers on there there's no room to get a spark plug socket on some of the plugs.. I end up having to use a 1/2 " drive socket so that it slips over the whole plug and then use vise grips to turn the socket.. it's a real pita. some of them I have to do from under the truck.. can I buy shorter plugs or will that be a problem with the plug boots?

thanks

Try a 5/8" offset wrench. I can get all my plugs pretty easy with it.

I think they do make shorter plugs, and probably wires to match. The boots are just rubber though, they can be cut cannot they?

This looks like it may work too

If you have a spare socket, doesn't necessarily have to be a spark plug socket, get access to a bench grinder and go to work. I did this when I was trying to change the plugs in my buddies drag van with a supercharged 468 motor. Just shortened it a bit, and tapered the ratchet side of the socket to allow clearance to get it on the plug. Worked great and still was able to use a ratchet.

I did something similar for my '71 Camaro.

I also used a 1/2" drive socket, but ground two adjacent flat spots on it so I could grab it with Chanel-Locks.

Works like a charm.

This is a good reason for you to go with Bosch Platinum single prongs plugs. They are shorter and will thus give you easier access, and they will last for 3 or 4 years easily, saving you the aggravation of pulling them every year (or six months).

thkanks..

Thanks for all the replies.. I had to 5/8 spark plug sockets.. so I took the zip cut to one of them and honed it out a little with the dye grinder. works GREAT.. I have to get under the truck for one of the plugs but I can do all of them with the new socket & wrench. takes about 1/3 of the time.

Why don't you like going under to do it. You get to lay down while you work

Do as 3GC says and get the 5/8" offset wrench. It works. no need to work from below, or mess around modding tools, it just works.

Si. :lala:

Also do a search next time, this comes up every couple of weeks!
