Beginner questions, will adding an open element to my 305 tbi do anything?

Hey guys,
Just got a 305 TBI car, runs great, but ive heard I might get some more power if I changed the air intake?

Is this relatively cheap and easy?
Will I feel any kind of difference?

this car is bone stock...as far as i know but im pretty sure it is

Also, the check engine light is on, and the mileage is sucking, any idea what that would be?

Thanks guys

btw its an 89 formula

I did an open element, it sounds cooler, and seems like there is a little more in the top end, but don't expect anything close to a miricle. Will the open element fit under a firebird hood?
As for the check engine light and milage they are probably related. Go to the tech articles and look up how to get the codes, then figure out what needs fixing.

Check out the "new to TBI" sticky at the top of the TBI forum. There is plenty of stuff in there that should help you out on the open element. It is a great first mod and you can really feel and hear the difference it makes.

Well with the increased air and the weight loss in your wallet it ought to help a little!
I couldnt help it!

You need to get a Haynes manual and use the check engine code trick using a paper clip. You might be able to figure something out on the light error. A good tune up always helps also, couldnt hurt even if it doesnt fix the problem.
