is the distributor hole in my intake too big?

hi,

I just purchased a super ram and an accel billetech dist. I put the distributor on the intake to see what it would look like assembled and I noticed that there was alot of play. The intake was not on the engine at the time. Will this play disapear when the engine is assembled completely, or is the distributor hole to big on the super ram base? If it is too big, will the bushing kit sold by mr. gasket fix this? Also, when i looked at a picture of the bushing kit, i noticed that the surface that the distributor sits on is quite a bit higher than where it would normally sit on the intake. Would this cause a problem with the gear mesh or oil pump drive?

thanks, nick

Since the hole inside the engine block aligns the distributor, it will be aligned to the cam gear regardless of the size of the hole in the intake. They probably make the holes a little oversized to account for milled heads, different deck heights, etc. Just dont forget the gasket

The distributor should only pilot off of the hole where it goes in the block (near the gear). The hole in the manifold is just a verticle mounting surface, from which the distributor is tightened down on, and is not intended to center the distributor. As far as the height of the dist. mounting pad, it can appear that the height of this pad is not correct when comparing different intakes (the height/shape of the metal surrounding the pad is sometimes quite different, and can be deceptive), even though the actual pad height surfaces are more than likely the same. If it still seems questionable, it can easily be measured and compared with a known good intake.

thanks for the replies

glad to hear i don't have a problem, my luck usually isn't so good with this car...

I was only worried about the surface being to high if i was using the bushing, but since i don't need the bushing, I guess that won't be a problem

thanks again

hi again

The motor just came in. After i put everything together, the distributor still had alot of play. The pin for the coil wire moves about 1/4" from center when i push on the side of the distributor. Is this normal?
