2 concerns, oil pump spring pin and cork gaskets.

I just installed the oil pump on my new engine. Before I did I instaled a higher pressure relief spring. I couldn't help but notice that it really wasn't that hard to get that pin in and out. Anyone ever had it vibrate loose? Is there anything you can do to prevent that?

Also..The oil pan gaskets that came with the felpro gasket set I bought are cork. That worries me..I've never trusted cork gaskets. Should I use them, coat them with RTV, or try to find some better gaskets?

Stake the housing over onto the pin.

Use the FelPro -R suffix pan gasket. I know people who will tell you taht it doesn't matter if a few pieces of grass or leaves get in a motor while they're working on it, because it will disintegrate, but think nothing of "sealing" one up with cork... go figure.

rb beat me to it, it can only back out, not push through. take a punch and stake it.

on my little engine and the 355 for chris's car i used one piece oil pan gaskets. very slick set up and i'm sure lot less likely to leak.

back from the dead. i got my new oil pump assembly and am gettin ready to take it apart so i can install the higher pressure #26 spring. sorry for the stupid question but what exactly is meant by "steaking" it? i understand i can take a punch and drive the pin out. keep in mind this is my first time even working on the bottom end of any engine. thanks.

Staking is when you use a punch or cold chisel to deform the metal after installation so that parts can't spontaneously uninstall themselves.

thanks. got it to work. pin came out easily with a punch. installed the new spring. staked the housing. also got the pickup installed. found it easier to clamp the pickup and hammer the housing instead of vice versa. got the Jegs retainer bolted up too.
