speedo cable go bad?

I have an 83 Z28 (100K) with a mechanical Speedo w/ cruise. It has some bounce when you get above 50 mph. I have lubed both cables (upper and lower) with no real change. Is it possible I need new cables? Do the mechanical Speedos do this over time?
Any thoughts would be welcome.

thanks,
phil

Sounds like you have cruise....

Does the cruise regulator spin freely with the cables removed? Those often cause that.

Yes i do. I am going to look at it again, but several years ago the cruise stopped working and seized up, so i removed the friction disc inside. I think that now there is just 2 gears turning freely inside.
