Need help on pulling block out of car
Need help on pulling block out of car
I'm in the process of pulling the motor out of my 87 Trans Am. I'm pulling the tranny out with the motor (it's a 5-spd) I've already pulled the heads and there at the machine shop so How/where can I put the bolt for the chain to lift the motor out on the back side? I did not find any holes in the back of the block to put a bolt thru, On the front I guess I can put one where the water pump holes are. But where on the back side of the engine. I was not planning on pulling the motor out I've been tring to find out why it's burning oil since the machine shop rebuilt the motor and I pulled the heads so they could check them. They turned out fine now it just leaves the block. This is my second engine pull First one by myself. If I would have know I would have pulled it with the heads still on. Any ideas? Thanks, Jason
Jas,
You should be safe using a head bolt hole. The engine without heads weighs less than 400 pounds. The extra 150 or so from the transmission should be easily handled by the ½" bolt and cast iron around that area. If you are concerned about usign a head bolt hole, you could remove the starter and use one of the 3/8" holes for the starter mounting.

i've pulled 1 or 2, maybe 20 engines with the trans and either use the intake bolts or the bolt holes in the end of the head. since i do it fairly often i have a couple of chains made up. 1 has an angle clip at each end with a hole for the bolt and the other has a flat plate with a hole for the bolt. between my chains and a 1" nylon choker i've had good luck getting engines out.
