Engine at WOT in between gear changes
Engine at WOT in between gear changes
I am working on a friends 1987 GTA with a 350 TPI and a 5-speed. The problem he is having happens when clutch is engaged for a gear change, When he pushes in the clutch the car will go to WOT until he engages the next gear. This is causing a very dangerous driving situation. Please Help!!!!!!!!

That's not very good. There's only two reasons I could think for that to happen. 1. The clutch linkage is caught on the throttle cable somewhere or 2. he has cruise control and it's really messed up to where it's trying to get the car going faster. Good luck!

Add a third possible cause:
I'm the one driving
That's what people call "power shifting" or "speed shifting". It is caused by failure to remove the right foot from the accelerator when the left one pushes the clutch.
Now of course if he picks his foot up and the motor revs anyway... time to look at linkages, return springs, etc. The clutch is hydraulic so I can't see how there's any connection there.

Definently check the following!
Accelerator Cable for binding
Anything on the floor of the car that can cause the pedal to hang up!!!
This is very important to fix, happened to me awhile ago, turned out to be my carburetor dying. I know the feeling of driving like that
If you can, try to simulate the problem with the vehicle parked. If it hangs up, check for any linkage problems, maybe some WD-40 will help.
